Ambitious Campaigns for Uncertain Times: Heller Fundraising Group founder offers advice in Chronicle of Philanthropy

Our founder, Peter Heller, is known for giving our clients time-tested advice in the face of tough situations.

He recently shared a few words of wisdom with the Chronicle of Philanthropy in an article about how nonprofits can still run successful capital campaigns in times of uncertainty and change—and why they should.

The article opens with one of our client partnerships: Newark’s WBGO, a public radio station with deep roots in jazz and community. The station is currently in the quiet phase of a $7 million campaign to secure a new office space, but when Congress introduced a recission bill that would claw back 9% of WBGO’s budget, the board wondered if it was the right time for an ambitious campaign.

Peter was the first fundraising expert quoted. He shared why he advised WBGO—and other clients—to stay the course.

“Each [economic crisis] was a unique and scary thing,” he told the Chronicle. “But in each of those times, money was still being raised. The nonprofits that stayed in the game—those were the ones that got that [money.]”

We’re honored that the Chronicle put a spotlight on the great work happening at WBGO, as well as how we’re helping two other partners move through uncertain waters. The article also highlights how Temple Shalom in Chevy Chase, Md., is adapting its campaign timeline in the wake of federal workforce cuts that hit the congregation’s membership. And Heather Seger, director of Martha’s Vineyard Museum, talks about how she’s making the case for supporting cultural institutions as donor attention turns to essential services.

WBGO, MVM and Temple Shalom are living proof of the advice we offer to all our clients: bold fundraising isn't about ignoring risk—it's about leading through it with vision, credibility, and trust.
